Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies
Made by: Natasha
My Grandma Zelmer used to always make the best desserts, and I’m not talking about anything fancy, just simple, delicious cookies and dessert squares. As a kid, my favourite was her chocolate chip cookies. I’d wait outside the kitchen for the bowl and spoon, risking salmonella each time, but damn that batter was good. Here’s her recipe, with a few amendments. Because as much as I love you, Grandma, using margarine and not butter is just…no.
Recipe
Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies
Servings: 12 cookies
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 14 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
½ cup butter
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup white sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 egg, well beaten
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chocolate chips
Directions
Heat oven to 360˚F.
Cream butter with a wooden spoon.
Add sugars and vanilla and mix. At this point, you may want to taste-test. Not for any particular reason. I just like to eat butter and sugar.
Add egg and mix well.
Sift together flour, salt and baking soda and add to mixture.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Rub your cookie sheet with a light coating of butter. Even if you use a non-stick pan, I like the added butter taste.
Drop tablespoonfuls of dough, 2 inches apart, onto baking sheet.
Bake for 14 minutes.
Let cool and enjoy!
Grandma Zelmer’s tip:
My Grandma liked to add ½ cup of walnuts. But I prefer to keep it simple.
Sorry, Grandma.
